Mental Health Emergency Resources 

There is often trouble accessing NHS resources due to various difficulties, and waiting lists can be long, however there are resources available that are either free, or ask for a small fee. These can be valuable lifeline to have in the meantime;

Childline: 

This service offers free confidential help to trained professionals, via phone, email and online at any-time for people all young people. They also provide many toolkits on their websites that you can use, to understand how you are feeling, how to approach an adult for help, and to connect with other young people who maybe going through a similar situation as yourself.

NSPCC: 

This service offers a line of service for children and young adults going through abuse, and also the means for adults to report suspected abuse. They provide advice and support on how to deal with mental health, such as anxiety and depression. In particular a section online where parents/carers/adults can research the potential signs in a child or young person and how to help.

Mind: 

Offer advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They campaign to improve services that are offered, alongside raising awareness of mental health and promoting the understanding it deserves. They offer callers confidential help, for the price of what a local phone call would be (landline). They also offer a legal line, which offers information on mental health related law to the public and professionals.

Shout: 

Shout is a free 24/7 text messaging service, that won’t appear on your phone bill, that supports anyone who is struggling to cope. They will hold conversations with those who are anxious, stressed, depressed, suicidal, overwhelmed, or who just need support. Their trained volunteers are there for you 24/7 to listen and support you to get to a calmer and safe place. 

To start a conversation, text the word ‘SHOUT’ to 85258

Samaritans: 

Are there 24/7 to take a phone call if you are struggling to cope and need someone to listen, without any judgement or pressure. They offer listening and support to people and communities in times of need, including those in prisons, schools, hospitals and on the rail network. They also now provide a self-help app, which comes with a built-in mood monitor.

Calm: 

Campaign against living miserably, taking a stand against suicide. They run a free and confidential helpline and webchat, which is open from 5pm to midnight, 365 days a year. They also support those who have been bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP).

YoungMinds:

Support children and young person talk openly about their mental health, and what to do once they have spoken out. They provide support to adults on how to support to a child or young person, when they have opened up about mental health difficulties. Alongside both of these stages, to empower a youth led movement, to campaign that children and young people require adequate mental health support. Online they provide an area for young people, and also an area for adults, so both can be supported in times of need. 





No Panic:

They specialise in the self help recovery of panic attacks, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorders, and other related anxiety disorders. By providing the skills that is needed to manage your own condition and work towards recovery, enabling you to lead a more fulfilled life. They offer a support line that is open 10am - 10pm 365 days a year, which also includes a dedicated youth line and youth hub.

SANE: 

They provide a variety of services to help those who need mental health support. This can be done by phone, email, and text, they also have a SANE community, where you can remain anonymous if you wish. They offer emotional support to anyone who has a mental health need, including family members and carers. Unlike many other helplines, they can also provide access to a limited number of on-going support sessions with the same SANE staff member each week, for a short amount of time.
